We all want to drink from the fountain of youth, or at least diminish the signs that we are aging. Fine lines and deeper creases can start forming as early as the mid- to late-twenties, and many people in the prime of their lives begin to feel old. Before you buy a wrinkle cream or other anti-aging serum, however, take a moment and learn of the risks that are involved with some of these products. While there are many good ones that will help your skin stay healthy, there are some that can actually cause damage.
First, beware of products that contain parabens. This is a common additive that increases shelf life of cosmetic products. A link between parabens and cancer has recently been found by researchers. Seen on labels as methyl, ethyl, and butyl or propyl paraben, these can also cause skin reactions, allergies, or rashes. In addition, they have been connected to behavior and mood changes, infertility, and breast cancer. Avoid parabens by carefully reading the label. Also stay away from products that have added fragrances. Even on products labeled as “natural,” fragrances derived from various chemicals can be added to produce a more pleasing aroma. It is not uncommon for companies to use a mixture of dozens of dissimilar chemicals, which can result in skin damage.
Before purchasing a product, search the ingredients list for alcohol, which can also be listed as ethanol, ethyl, and methanol. Alcohol dries out the skin, which can leave it looking and feeling tight, itchy, and irritated. It will not help the appearance of fine or deep lines, and in fact, can leave your face looking older because it is far less hydrated. Skin needs moisture to retain a healthy and youthful appearance: avoid products with alcohol.
Look for the following on your labels and avoid products that contain them:
Propylene glycol – this can damage the nervous system and cause liver or kidney damage.
Triethanolamine, Hydantoin Diazolidinyl, urea and Imidazolidinyl urea – these are known carcinogens.
Human Growth Hormone – this is sometimes found in anti-aging treatments, and while often effective, can contribute to the development of diabetes.
When looking for the best wrinkle cream – one that will not only help the appearance of your skin, but that will not harm your body – make a list of these ingredients and bring it to the store. Carefully read labels. It is worth the extra time it takes to avoid harmful products or ingredients. There are a variety of beneficial treatments, so it is well worth the time it takes to find them.
