It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that proper health, nutrition and rest are all linked to fewer wrinkles and healthier skin, but there may be another culprit out there looking to rob us of our young looking skin. The positions that we sleep in at night and the amount of motion that we have can directly impact how we look in the morning, and since we spend almost a third of our lives asleep, it makes sense that what presses against us at night can impact our skin’s appearance later in life. Before you rush out and buy a new series of anti wrinkle creams, you may want to think about how you sleep each night.
The first, and most obvious cure for sleep wrinkles is changing the position that you sleep in. If you are one of the millions of people who sleep on their stomach or on their sides, you are pressing your face against a pillow for a third of your day. By sleeping on your back, you give your skin a chance to breathe and you can begin reducing the amount of anti wrinkle cream you use. It may take some practice and some discipline but it is not as difficult to train yourself to sleep on your back as it might seem.
The next step to a wrinkle free morning is to examine the material that you sleep with. Synthetic fibre pillows, blankets and comforters are often more unforgiving compared to their down counterparts. Since switching over all of your bedding can be expensive, start with the pillows and work your way though all of your bedding until you have gone all natural. You’ll notice a decrease in the amount of anti aging cream you will need almost right away.
As long as you are upgrading your sleep materials, you may want to take a look at the piece of fabric that is closest to your face the whole evening: the pillowcase. Some popular pillowcases sold by mega-giant Ikea actually have lifted patterns on them, which is fine if you sleep on your back, but if you sleep on your side or stomach, your face will have that pillowcase print on it in the morning. Try switching to a silk or satin pillowcase that is pattern free. Not only will you likely sleep better, but you will need less in the morning, as well.
Finally, sleep wrinkles can actually be caused often times by not sleeping at all. Insomnia is a condition that affects millions of people every year, and while some folks just pop a sleeping pill, others simply give up and go nights with very little sleep. If you are currently experiencing insomnia it is important that you seek the advice of a doctor as soon as you can. The long term health of your skin and the amount of creams you use every day depend on it. You only get one set of skin, it is up to you to take care of it.
